Blue-Grey Football Alumni Update: Kamryn Pettway
Plenty of prospects, some of them high-profile, others under-the-radar, have come and gone in the past decade or so, since the inception of the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl. Still, the talent level across the board on the national level has been about as good as it gets.
Things don’t figure to change anytime soon, either. That said, the hype is building for a pair of games this year: The first is on Dec. 20 at AT&T Stadium and home of the Dallas Cowboys. The second is on Jan. 9 at Raymond James Stadium and home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
To gain a better understanding about the rapidly growing direction of things, perhaps it’s best to take some time to reflect on the humble beginnings. Therefore, moving forward, the plan is to more closely examine the brand’s many alumni from all over the country.
The focus this time is on Kamryn Pettway from Prattville (AL), a once well-known recruit in the Class of 2014 who lined up for the East in a 41-7 loss to the West at the playground of Jerry Jones. Despite the result, the Auburn commit showed glimpses of his potential.
There was plenty of talent on hand for the weekend’s events, among them Texas Tech commit Patrick Mahomes, Louisville commit London Iakopo, Colorado State commit Coleman Key, Hawaii commit Devan Stubblefield and SEC target Lonnie Johnson.
Based on the All-American Bowl and body of work on the prep circuit, he was the nation’s No. 27 running back in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, an accurate indicator of talent considering the tool takes into account evaluations of the major recruiting services.
“Kamryn has great upside,” said NFL veteran Mark McMillian, who coached the West to victory over Pettway & Co. “I was impressed with his athletic ability and quickness, also with his knowledge of the game. Any recruit who plays in the SEC, that’s a big-time player.”
Pettway didn’t play much in his first year at Auburn. Things are about to change. After a biding his time, the 6-foot and 235-pound redshirt freshman running back will be in action for the Tigers on Nov. 21 against Idaho in a nonconference game at 12 p.m. (EST).
It’s reasonable to expect that Pettway will compete for the starter’s role, perhaps at h-back or tight end, though Cameron Tony poses as a threat. Roc Thomas and Jovon Robinson will likely handle the duties at running back. Pettway remains an option, nevertheless.
Bottom line: It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising to see Pettway embark on a successful career with the Tigers in one of the country’s most difficult conferences. Of course, we’ll provide updates on the status of the brand’s All-American alum every step of the way.
