Blue-Grey Football Alumni Update: Vic Enwere
Plenty of prospects, some of them high-profile, others under-the-radar, have come and gone in the past decade or so, since the inception of the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl. Still, the talent level across the board on the national level has been about as good as it gets.
Things don’t figure to change anytime soon, either. That said, the hype is building for a pair of games this year: The first is on Dec. 20 at AT&T Stadium and home of the Dallas Cowboys. The second is on Jan. 9 at Raymond James Stadium and home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
To gain a better understanding about the rapidly growing direction of things, perhaps it’s best to take some time to reflect on the humble beginnings. Therefore, moving forward, the plan is to more closely examine the brand’s many alumni from all over the country.
Vic Enwere from Fort Bend Austin (TX) will be the main topic of conversation. Rightfully so given the well-rounded effort of the current Cal running back from the Class of 2014 who helped the West to a 41-7 victory over the East out in Texas. He nearly stole the show.
Despite having the opponent’s attention on him, from start to finish during the All-American Bowl, the defense still could not stop Enwere from delivering on a 42-yard touchdown run. He was just getting started too and threw a 46-yard touchdown pass on a trick-play.
There was no certainly shortage of well-known national talent at the game, with Texas Tech commit Patrick Mahomes on hand, also Louisville commit London Iakopo, Hawaii commit Devan Stubblefield, Auburn commit Kamryn Pettway and SEC target Lonnie Johnson.
“He’s one of the most versatile and powerful backs I’ve seen on the high school level,” NFL veteran and Blue-Grey All-American Bowl coach Mark McMillian said. “He had great vision. Still does. That’s what separates him from others. He’ll do great things at Cal.”
A bigger back during his days on the prep scene, little or nothing, has changed since. Perhaps Enwere has bulked up a bit more. The 6-foot-1 and 230-pound sophomore will be in uniform on Sept. 26 against Washington in a Pac-12 Conference game at 5:30 p.m. (EST).
As things stand, he appears to be second on the depth chart, right behind senior Daniel Lasco. Underclassmen Tre Watson and Lonny Powell are also in the mix. Still, all signs point to Enwere soon receiving plenty of opportunities to solidify his role in the backfield.
Sky’s the limit. At least, that’s the consensus based on Enwere’s resume, including 12 games last season for Cal and a nearly six yards per touch average with two scores, also his successful audition beforehand on the national stage at the brand’s All-American Bowl.
