John “Gus” Bell of Millis (MA) passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, after a long illness and in the presence of the love of his life and wife Marie. Born on March 14, 1943, and affectionately known as Gus, he was a beacon of light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on God’s green earth was one marked by love, compassion and generosity.
Gus’ passing has left a void in the hearts of family, friends, and many more. We ask that you remember him not for the way his life ended, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact he had on all, young and old alike.
Plans are in place to honor the memory of Gus Bell and celebrate his life during this year’s series of nationwide All-American Combines and annual All-American Bowls. Stay tuned, plenty of additional details will soon follow.
Proudly and honorably, in his 20’s, Gus served in the U.S. Army Special Forces Unit during the height of the Vietnam War. A highly-decorated veteran, he was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star, also two purple hearts.
Later in life, during the 1990’s, at the urging of his brother Dick Bell, Gus was a successful NFL agent and NFL contract adviser.
Not long after, at the turn of the century, Gus and his son Erik Bell founded Blue-Grey Events, Inc. Together, they helped thousands of high school players secure college scholarships, and in turn, that helped individuals prepare for future success beyond football. In doing so, Gus reconnected with colleagues from the NFL, including multiple Pro Football Hall of Famers and a litany of administration contacts with the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, among many others professional franchises.
Outside of his philanthropic work in the sports industry, Gus spent a majority of his time with his wife, Marie. He also found true joy in animals over the years, particularly his dogs. Gus had an affection for racehorses as well. His unconditional love in each of these very important phases can’t be overlooked.
Sharing advice on life and wisdom from his own experiences is something that came freely, as Gus often thought of others. And at times, before himself. A great friend, Gus would give you the shirt off his back if you were on his team, many can attest to that fact. Cross him, however, that was a different story. Still, somehow and someway, his understanding and caring nature always seemed to prevail in the end.
Charismatic, Gus had a rare gift for telling great stories, some true and others might have been a bit of a stretch. Either way, he had a unique way of making others smile and laugh with his words. Gus had a captivating presence and left a lasting impact on all who crossed his path, whether it was briefly or for an extended period of time.
Those who knew him will remember him for his adventurous and free spirit. Although Gus’ physical presence may no longer grace our lives, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May his memory be a blessing. May we carry forth his legacy of love, compassion and generosity in all that we do. His light will forever shine brightly in our hearts.
