Blue-Grey All-American Combine: Southwest Regional Scouting Report (2016)
No secret, and for the most part it’s true, some of the nation’s top prospects on the whole prep circuit typically come from one of three states. Those being, of course, California, Florida and Texas.
After already making stops in the Golden State and Sunshine State, the notion held up well again this weekend during the Blue-Grey All-American Combine (Southwest Regional) at UT Arlington (TX).
NFL veterans Ray Crockett, Tony Banks and Larry Ryans were a few of the one-time professionals turned instructors and here’s a look at the individuals who left a lasting impression in the Lone Star State.
Jaylon Gipson, QB, Mexia (TX): The 6-foot-2 and 195-pound junior impressed around this time last year, but was not on hand to deliver an encore effort. Still, he remains firmly on the radar.
Kishawn Kelley, QB, Corsicana (TX): Another prospect expected to be in action during the afternoon, the 6-3 and 200-pound junior didn’t make on the field.
Billy Reagins, RB, Kempner (TX): The 6-1 and 205-pound junior was the best recruit at his position. No surprise, he’s received interest from SEC schools.
Prince Ugwu, RB, Westwood (TX): Eager to prove himself on the big stage, the 5-9 and 190-pound junior held his own when the spotlight was focused on him.
Jaylinn Sidney, RB, Lake Highlands (TX): The 5-9 and 211-pound sophomore played with the poise of an experienced varsity veteran and his future is bright.
Kaylon Geiger, WR, Paschal (TX): In constant contact with teams from the Big 12 Conference, the 5-10 and 170-pound junior was unstoppable throughout.
Sean Shaw, WR, Jones (OK): The 6-5 and 200-pound sophomore has already been in talks with programs in the ACC and SEC. That said, sky’s the limit for him.
Jackson Pace, TE, Pleasant Grove (TX): A big and reliable target in the red zone, the 6-3 and 215-pound junior quickly became a favorite of the signal-callers.
Gunnar Murphy, LB, Melissa (TX): The 6-2 and 235-pound junior looked the part. And played the part. Chances are, college interest in him soon picks up.
Tyler Lavine, LB, Cedar Park (TX): 5-11 and 200-pound junior took opened up eyes on both sides of the ball. His calling card could be defense though.
Gerardo Gonzalez, LB, Roma (TX): Seemingly no one worked harder, or was willing to learn more from the coaches, than the 6-1 and 225-pound junior.
Mitchell Culkin, Jenks (OK): The 6-foot and 195-pound sophomore started off on the right foot and then finished the same way. The effort was impressive.
Tavion Hawthorne, DB, Shoemaker (TX): The 5-10 and 165-pound junior did not once back away from challenges and more battles were won than lost.
Sterling Alford, DB, Santa Fe (OK): With what appears to be close to a college-ready frame, the 6-2 and 170-pound junior turned more than a few heads.
Tyler Puppos, DB, Jefferson (WV): The 5-10 and 165-pound junior refused to be outworked. He was the first one out on the field and the last to leave.
Andre Gibbs, DB, Lamar (TX): Strong, also equally as fast, the 5-11 and 190-pound sophomore is just now starting to realize some of his limitless potential.
Chauncey Martin, DB, Pleasant Grove (TX): The 5-11 and 170-pound sophomore was another one of the many underclassmen who had a good debut.
Jake Helton, OL, Vandegrift (TX): Down in the trenches, the 6-2 and 275-pound junior was a tough out and gave opponents fits from start to finish.
Seth Greer, OL, Clarendon (TX): The 6-3 and 270-pound junior showed multiple somewhat surprising flashes of good quickness, especially for his size.
Josh Schnitker, OL, Sherman (TX): More effective as the workout went on, the 6-3 and 260-pound junior did not relent when the going got tough.
Steven Krager, OL, Jenks (TX): The 6-1 and 255-pound sophomore might have been the top prospect at his spot on the field, regardless of class distinction.
Jordan Penniewright, DL, Linclon (TX): One-on-one, the 6-3 and 375-pound junior had his way. For the record, the occasional double-team didn’t stop him.
Avery Booker, DL, Washington (TX): The 6-4 and 198-pound junior was one of the more explosive types in attendance. With added bulk, his ceiling is high.
Terrell Cooper, DL, Lindale (TX): Well-rounded and focused, the 6-3 and 235-pound junior did everything that the coaching staff asked him to do.
