Blue-Grey Football Alumni Update: Michael McGinnis
Plenty of prospects, some of them high-profile, others under-the-radar, have come and gone in the past decade or so, since the inception of the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl. Still, the talent level across the board on the national level has been about as good as it gets.
Things don’t figure to change anytime soon, either. That said, the hype is building for a pair of games this year: The first is on Dec. 20 at AT&T Stadium and home of the Dallas Cowboys. The second is on Jan. 9 at Raymond James Stadium and home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
To gain a better understanding about the rapidly growing direction of things, perhaps it’s best to take some time to reflect on the humble beginnings. Therefore, moving forward, the plan is to more closely examine the brand’s many alumni from all over the country.
The topic of conversation here is Michael McGinnis from Allentown (NJ). And why not? As a member of the Class of 2013, in the game’s debut no less, he was named Defensive MVP as South defeated North, 21-14, at Raymond James Stadium.
Worth noting, Kansas State commit Byron Pringle was Offensive MVP on that day. Arizona State commit Davon Durant, Akron commit Austin Wolf, Ohio State commit Reid Worstell and Florida State commit Hunter DeWitt also shared the field.
Fast forward, to the here and now, you’ll find that all signs point to the 6-foot-2 and 225-pound freshman linebacker for Indiana possibly making his collegiate debut against Southern Illinois on Sept. 5 in a nonconference game at 4 p.m. (EST).
The journey for McGinnis has had plenty of twists and turns along the way. A one-time Miami commit, plans to line up for the Hurricanes never materialized. With the recruiting process open once again, he had plenty of options to choose from.
The Hoosiers, accordingly, emerged as a potential destination, among a handful of others. Still, there was a bit of talk about him going the Junior College route before making the jump. Regardless, Bloomington (IN) appears to be the best possible fit.
Seemingly with a bright future ahead, it’s worth mentioning and what seems like a very short time ago, McGinnis left a lasting impression during the brand’s All-American Bowl in Florida. He took home the hardware for Defensive MVP, too.
