Blue-Grey All-American Combine: Northern Regional Scouting Report (2017)

Big 10 Conference target Max Janes held his own against many of the region’s best at the Blue-Grey All-American Combine in St. Paul (MN).

Again, back in this part of the country for the second consecutive year, there were no surprises at the Blue-Grey All-American Combine (Northern Regional).

The prospects on hand, some high-profile, others under-the-radar, were expected to be prepared for the workout at University of Northwestern-St Paul (MN).

Led by NFL veteran trainer Reggie Young, true to form, the individuals in attendance delivered the desired results. So, here’s a look at the highlights.

Jackson Crawford, QB, Cretin-Derham Hall (MN): The 6-3 and 200-pound junior was the top player at his position. Also, North Dakota State and South Dakota State are interested.

James Pabst, RB, Middleton (WI): Seemingly no one worked harder than the 5-9 and 185-pound junior. Alex Relling from Mounds View (MN) deserved a mention, as well.

Riley Smieja, RB, Royalton (MN): The 6-foot and 215-pound junior is more of a fullback. Worth noting, Jett Gaudette from Cambridge Isanti (MN) did a good job.

Garett Maag, WR, St. Croix Lutheran (MN): Northern Iowa and San Diego State are a few schools who have been in contact with 6-4 and 195-pound junior.

Andy Groebner, WR, Andover (MN): The 6-2 and 185-pound junior has feelers from multiple programs, with North Dakota State at, or near, the top of the list.

Dakota Matthees, WR, Winona (MN): A big target, particularly down around the red zone, North Dakota is an apparent fan of the 6-4 and 195-pound junior.

Max Janes, TE, Mounds View (MN): The 6-2 and 230-pound junior nearly stole the show. Rightfully, Iowa and Minnesota are teams who could be in the mix.

Pat Boland, LB, Elk River (MN): A Conference USA target, given the communication with Marshall, the 6-foot and 220-pound junior possesses plenty of upside.

Zach Stelzer, LB, Lakeville South (MN): The 6-foot and 205-pound junior had a motor that simply did not stop. With one gear, it was full-speed ahead throughout.

Kaleb Stevens, LB, Proctor (MN): Schools from the Pioneer Football League, most notably Drake, have kept a watchful eye on the 6-2 and 235-pound junior.

Zach Mensink, LB, Owatonna (MN): The 6-foot and 217-pound junior was on the roster for the workout. However, an untimely injury prevented him from going.

Nicholas Ellingson, DB, Irondale (MN): A late addition, but worth the wait, the 5-10 and 175-pound junior filled in rather admirably for teammate Ayrias Sears.

Max Sandin, DB, Roseville (MN): The 5-11 and 180-pound junior received plenty of reps, and when all was said and done, he took advantage of the opportunities.

Jarrett Horst, OL, Middleton (WI): Already with offers in place, the 6-4 and 295-pound junior is on the radar of Minnesota and Western Michigan, among others.

Jan Salmon, OL, Fort Osage (MO): The 6-2 and 325-pound junior turned heads, and during the whole process, earned the much-needed respect of his counterparts.

Devontae Hatcher, DL, Stillwater (MN): Versatile, the 6-4 and 300-pound junior played on both sides of the ball in this setting, but ultimately, seems destined for defense.

Stephen Kletscher, DL, St. Croix Lutheran (MN): The 6-4 and 240-pound junior is an Ivy League target. Potential suitors include Columbia, Penn, Princeton and Yale.

Ronney Trass, DL, Irondale (MN): Northern Iowa and North Dakota State might have vested interest in the 6-4 and 275-pound junior at some point in the near future.

Michael Fahim, DL, Mounds View (MN): The 6-5 and 230-pound junior was athletic as they come. North Dakota State and South Dakota State are aware of that fact, too.

Logan Loiselle, DL, Two Harbors (MN): Another recruit that the Pioneer Football League has reached out to in the past, the 6-4 and 215-pound junior impressed many here.

Editor’s Note: Those who did well at this workout, in time, could be invited to one of the brand’s All-American Bowls held at NFL stadium and nationally broadcast on ESPN’s family of networks.

The games take place at Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Raymond James Stadium, Jacksonville Jaguars’ EverBank Field or San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium.

Moving forward, the Blue-Grey Football Selection Committee will consider a number of different factors before making an all-important decision on invites to the All-American Bowl. Stay tuned.
